Understanding the radical humility of the Incarnation

The Default Mode

Most of us carry a "Palace Complex." We assume that if God is going to show up in our lives, it has to be through a promotion, a miraculous healing, or a sudden burst of clarity. We look for Him in the high places, the polished versions of our lives, and the successes. Because we expect a King in a palace, we walk right past the King in the cave of our own mundane, messy reality.

The Carmelite Shift

To move from a "notional" understanding of God to a "real" encounter, we have to grapple with the sheer shock of the Incarnation.

"God loved us so much that He made Himself in our image. Seeing that infinite love and goodness, where He lowered Himself to our poverty compared to His infinite transcendent godhood, shows how much He loves us."

This "lowering" isn't just a historical event; it is the blueprint for how God meets you today. He isn't waiting for you to fix your poverty before He enters; He entered into poverty to find you. When we stop demanding that God speak to us on our terms with pomp and circumstance we begin to find Him in the "Ordinary." Whether it’s the silence of the Eucharist or the quiet maintenance of our very existence, God is present. He didn't come as a baby just to be "cute"; He came to prove that no corner of your human experience is beneath His dignity to inhabit.
