Why your search for a "perfect" Christmas is actually pushing God away.

The Default Mode

We approach Christmas with a strategy of "fullness." We stuff the calendar with events, the living room with gifts, and our stomachs with food. We attempt to curate the perfect "Hallmark moment," smoothing over family toxicity and maximizing comfort. We believe that if we can just get the atmosphere right as warm, peaceful, and abundant that we will finally feel the spirit of Christmas. But year after year, this pursuit of fullness often leaves us feeling more hollow, stressed, and spiritually exhausted than before.

The Carmelite Shift

We have forgotten the setting of the Incarnation. God did not enter the world in the "Inn." The Inn was full. It represents a life crowded with noise, comfort, and self-sufficiency.

As we discussed in this week’s episode:

"The manger—Christ's manger—represents lack. To find Christ, you must experience poverty. At Christmas, we are usually thinking of fullness... But there is no room for God in all of that because there is no space. In fact, His poverty is found in the very fact that He took on human nature and impoverished Himself... If you are feeling rejection or feel out of place, you are actually closer to the Holy Family than you realize."

The Manger was a feeding trough. It was cold. It likely smelled of animals. It was a place of discomfort. If you find yourself this week feeling lonely, overwhelmed, or stuck in a "smelly" family situation you can’t fix, stop fighting it. That lack of comfort isn't a sign that Christmas is ruined; it is the very space Christ chose to inhabit. The "Inn" has no room for Him because it is full of itself. The Manger has room because it is empty.
