Why the end of "holiday spirit" is the beginning of real faith.
The Default Mode
We tend to treat our spiritual lives like a holiday playlist; if the "vibe" isn't right, we assume God has left the room. We wait for the emotional equivalent of an angelic choir to tell us what to do next. When the decorations come down and the silence of ordinary time creeps back in, we mistake our lack of "feeling" for a lack of God. We’ve become addicted to the consolation, forgetting that faith isn't a feeling; it’s a direction.
The Carmelite Shift
In the latest episode, we look at the sharp contrast between the Shepherds and the Magi to understand how God actually moves us toward maturity.
"When the angels showed up to the shepherds, they exploded onto the scene... The shepherds showed up and reached Christ quickly, but in the Magi's case, they had to journey a long way. They had to go to Herod first to try to find the new king, following the star until it eventually descended over where Jesus was in Bethlehem. That is where we are now. The star represents walking in faith, while the angels represent good feelings."
The transition from the "angels" to the "starlight" is the standard path of the soul. The shepherds got the fireworks, but the Magi did the heavy lifting of the journey. If you find yourself in a season where the spiritual "explosions" have ceased, don't panic. You aren't losing your way; you are being invited into the "Naked Faith" of the Magi. Following the starlight requires more discipline than listening to an angel, but it’s the only path that leads to the true Epiphany.
The Bridge
If you are tired of the gap between what you know and how you live, you need a practical way to bridge that distance.
